Open and Closed Study Carrels

Open Carrels

There are six 'open' carrels in total, each accommodating one student, and anyone can use them. The open carrels are so called because they open out onto the reading room - they provide a desk with drawer space, a cupboard and an empty bookcase. Since anyone can use an open carrel at any time, please don't leave any of your items/belongings in the carrel when you have finished your study session.

We have installed a plug-in 27-inch monitor in two of the open carrels (bottom right open carrel and top right open carrel, with a third at a desk in the main reading room) so that you can attach your device to one if you would like to, in order to get a larger playback image compared to your laptop.

Closed Carrels

The library has five private study carrels which are given out to students who can demonstrate a particular need for such a space, often based on welfare grounds (but not always). Allocation of these 'closed' carrels - so-called because they are separate rooms that each have a lockable door - is on a yearly basis, and is decided by Wadham's Academic Office, to whom anyone interested should apply.
