Databases

In addition to physical libraries there is a large virtual library of databases in a wide variety of subject areas. There are thousands of databases and reference resources, which can be sorted by subject, or listed by database title. It also features a 'database of the month', and trial versions of recently acquired databases. It's highly recommended!

Examples: Oxford English Dictionary, Complete Arden Works of Shakespeare, Lexis Nexis, Hansard Parliamentary reports, MEDLINE abstracts, e-books.

Electronic journals

Another excellent resource is the gateway for electronic journals, where all the latest research in your subject area is likely to be published. Journals are available in full-text and can be searched by title, by subject, by citation, or even by vendor or ISSN (the journal's equivalent of a book's ISBN).

Examples: Nature, Science, Journal of Roman Studies, Journal of Refugee Studies [Currently there are nearly 3,500 journals included!]

Training

Please do come and ask a member of the library staff if you would like help with any of these resources. In addition the Bodleian library services run formal training sessions, through their Bodleian i-Skills programme, which is organised according to subject interests.

Accessing all of the above from outside Oxford

When you are away from Oxford during the vacation you can still connect to all of the resources above. Many are available simply through your Single Sign On password, but for some you will need to use the VPN service (virtual private network), in order to get Oxford's network to recognise you as a bona fide user.
